早期的直流发电机是氧化行业的代电源,到6年代由于大功率的整流管的产生出现了氧化行业的二代电源硅整流机,但是这两代电源都存在着笨重、耗能、输出指标低以及精度差,控制不便等缺点,以后逐步被三代整流机可控硅整流机所取代。可控硅整流机由于精度高、控制方便在7年代以后逐步得到了广泛的应用。但是可控硅整流机仍是以笨重的高耗材的工频变压器为基础,因此该电源体积大、笨重、高耗材高耗能的缺点依然存在。又由于该电源的电压和电流的调整是依靠可控硅的开放角度来控制,因此会产生大量的谐波,从而污染电网,由于可控硅整流器工作频率在低频段(5~6Hz),因此不容易被滤波器吸收,这显然不符合清洁生产的要求。
